The fortifications

Built in the 17th century by French architect Vauban to protect the island against continual British attacks, the town fortifications of Saint-Martin-de-Ré include moats, strongholds and lunettes to visit.

Horse-drawn carriage tour of Saint-Martin

Comfortably seated inside a carriage drawn by a stout horse, discover the historic and lively places that make Saint-Martin-de-Ré such a distinctive city at the heart of the Île de Ré.

The fortifications, the citadel, the fortified church, the harbour, the old streets… For an hour or so, at the horse’s rhythm, you will relive the glorious times of the Île de Ré and Saint-Martin-de-Ré.
